Walk into any high-performing warehouse — in Kampala, Nairobi or Rotterdam — and you will find the same unglamorous disciplines executed relentlessly. Technology helps, but it amplifies discipline; it never replaces it. Here are the five we see separating good warehouses from great ones across Uganda.
1. Cycle counting beats the annual stocktake
Great warehouses count a slice of inventory every day, weighted by value and velocity. The annual wall-to-wall count, with its shutdowns and surprises, is a symptom of weak control. Daily cycle counts catch errors while the trail is still warm.
2. Safety stock is a calculation, not a guess
Too many stores carry “two months, just in case”. Proper safety stock logic uses demand variability and lead-time variability to set buffers scientifically — typically releasing 15–30% of working capital without hurting service levels.
3. Slotting follows velocity
Fast movers belong near dispatch, at waist height. Re-slotting quarterly against actual movement data routinely cuts picking time by a fifth — the cheapest productivity gain in logistics.
Inventory accuracy is not an audit outcome. It is a daily habit.
4. Every exception has an owner
Damages, expired stock, negative variances: in great warehouses each exception is logged, owned and closed within a defined time. In weak ones, exceptions accumulate in a corner — physically and financially.
5. KPIs live on the floor, not in a report
Dock-to-stock time, picking accuracy, inventory record accuracy: the best teams see yesterday’s numbers at today’s shift briefing. What is reviewed daily improves daily.
